Specialist on Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability

Plan International Finland is seeking an experienced Climate Resilience Specialist with knowledge on gender equality and girls’ rights to strengthen its programme team. Your main role is to support the design and implementation of projects that address the impact of climate change on gender equality and girls’ rights. You will provide technical guidance to our project teams and partners in our programme countries and manage climate resilience grants. You will work in close collaboration with Plan International's climate resilience staff and network.   

Your responsibilities will include:   

  • Providing advice and technical expertise for project planning, design, monitoring and evaluation on resilience and climate change adaptation in gender-transformative programming.   

  • Designing new climate resilience and adaptation projects that enhance girls’ rights and gender equality together with Plan International’s country teams.  

  • Integrating resilience, climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability into projects at design stage, as a cross-cutting consideration. 

  • Development of capacity building plans, training packages and toolkits, and providing training, coaching and mentorship on gender equality, resilience, environment and climate change related issues to programme staff and partners.     

  • Coordinating and leading the creation of partnerships to strengthen resilience, environmental sustainability and climate change in our programming.  

  • Supporting fundraising within your area of expertise through programme design, proposal development and writing and engagement with potential donors.   

  • Documenting and facilitating consistent learning and sharing of good practices among staff and partners.  

  • Grant management through participation in project planning, regular communication with country teams, financial monitoring, country visits, and reviewing reports and evaluations of specified projects.    

  • Contributing to Plan International’s global work on resilience, climate change and environmental sustainability.  

The position requires annually 6-8 weeks of travel, sometimes to hazardous environments.   

This position is based in Helsinki, Finland. Employment terms will be as per local conditions and you need to have the right to work in Finland. The salary is based on the Social sector collective bargain (TES) and the starting level for the salary is 3 472,41 €. However, the final salary depends on the extent of the relevant working experience. 

The aim is to fill the position from August 2020, however, personal circumstances will be taken into consideration.

      Who we are looking for

      Your qualifications:  

      • Educated to University Degree or equivalent in relevant field or corresponding experience.  

      • Significant work experience in providing technical support and oversight to resilience and climate change adaptation programmes. Experience in environmentally friendly programme approaches is desirable. Working experience from the global south within the development or humanitarian sector is considered as an asset.  

      • Experience in gender-sensitive programming. 

      • Significant experience in project planning, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation.   

      • Experience in designing and delivering training on resilience and climate change adaptation with a variety of audiences.   

      • Excellent negotiation and representation skills, and the ability to work comfortably with an ethnically diverse staff in a very sensitive environment.  

      • Fluency in English, both written and spoken.  

      • Ability to effectively advocate for, lobby and present issues at internal and external fora.   

      • Demonstrated ability to produce clear, concise reports, concept notes and other documentation.
