    Several member states of the EU have taken major steps backwards in the rule of law, democracy and human rights. Hungary and Poland are in the front line of this alarming development. The actions by the Governments of Hungary and Poland threaten the judicial independence and freedom of the media and undermine the rule of law as well as the respect for human rights.

    How can the civil society in Poland and Hungary operate in this environment? What is the role of human rights defenders? Are the core values of the EU at risk? How should the EU and its member states react?

    Top human rights experts from the human rights organisations in Hungary and Poland alongside with researchers and politicians will discuss these questions. Welcome to join us at the webinar to discuss and learn more!

    The speakers include:

    • András Léderer, Senior advocacy officer, Hungarian Helsinki Committee
    • Eliza Rutynowska, Lawyer at the Civil Development Forum (FOR) and pro bono lawyer for human rights activists in Poland
    • Heidi Hautala, Member and Vice- President of the European Parliament (the Greens), and Member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights
    • Johannes Koskinen, Member of the Finnish Parliament (Social Democratic Parliamentary Group), Member of the Grand Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee
    • Tuomas Ojanen, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Helsinki

    The webinar is moderated by award-winning journalist Katri Makkonen.

    Ihmisoikeusliiton englanninkielinen webinaari käsittelee oikeusvaltion, ihmisoikeuksien toteutumisen ja demokratian heikkenemistä EU:ssa keskittyen erityisesti Unkarin ja Puolan huolestuttavaan kehitykseen. 

    Perjantaina 29.10.2021 klo 12.00-15.00 järjestettävässä webinaarissa kysytään, millä tavalla kansalaisyhteiskunta pystyy toimimaan tiukentuneessa toimintaympäristössä. Mikä on ihmisoikeuspuolustajien rooli? Ovatko EU:n perusarvot murenemassa? Mikä on Suomen ja muiden EU:n jäsenmaiden reaktio tilanteeseen?

    Keskustelemassa aiheesta ovat muun muassa András Léderer unkarilaisesta Hungarian Helsinki Committee -ihmisoikeusjärjestöstä, Eliza Rutynowska puolalaisesta Civil Development Forum -ajatuspajasta, Euroopan parlamentin varapuheenjohtaja ja ihmisoikeuksien alivaliokunnan jäsen Heidi Hautala, kansanedustaja ja suuren valiokunnan ja ulkoasiainvaliokunnan jäsen Johannes Koskinen, Helsingin yliopiston valtiosääntöoikeuden professori Tuomas Ojanen. Tilaisuuden juontaa palkittu toimittaja Katri Makkonen.
